So far behind, but I wanted to get these up any way.
The Terror by Dan Simmons
First off, Dan Simmons gets points just for being the author of Hyperion. Secondly, he totally gets points for historical authenticity.
The Terror is about the Franklin Expedition to find the legendary northwest Passage. It isn't nessecary to know any more than that to enjoy this book.
It starts out in the middle of the story and you have to pay attention because a great number of the chapters are flashbacks. Essentially two ships, one of which is called the Terror, are up in the artic circle when they get frozen in for the winter. Everything seems fine until no thaw comes the following summer. The crew then finds out that over half of the stocks they have are tainted, having been improperly canned. To make matters worse, there's something out on the ice that wants to kill them all.
I really enjoyed The Terror. The flash backs brought you slowly up to date even as the rest of the story progressed. Crozier, the main character was absolutely kick ass and yet the book ends in a way that you're not expecting. I won't say more than that in case you guys want to read it.

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty

If you're not big on the whole "happily ever after" thing (cough Shinga cough) I think you'll like this book.
I started reading it because I found out it had won the Pulitzer a ways back when it came out and was curious.
THis book is technically the third in a four book series, but none of the others need to be read to appreciate this one. I love everything about this book. The characters are so real. Call and Gus are so wonderful and you really know them so well by the end. YOu understand that they do what they do for each other not just because they're friends, but because they've been friends with each other for thirty years and they can't imagine not saying yes.
And some of the things are so hard to imagine in our modern world, ie the treck from Texas to Montana with almost three thousand cattle.
I just can't say enough good things about this book. It is lenghty though, so if you don't think you'll have the time, feel free to watch the TV series they did with it staring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones (runs about eight hours).

Jo died. Usually that doesn't stop me, but I felt like Jo had a good run. I miss her but that doesn't mean I would bring her back. Well... maybe I would.

Flute and Talen. Hands down. They are adorable and they get supported often right from the beginning.
